What is Diamond Colour?

International Colour Scale For Diamonds
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) developed the International Colour Scale, the global standard for grading diamond colour. This trusted scale ranges from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Each diamond graded by the GIA is examined by at least five expert gemmologists. Lab grown diamonds, which are identical in appearance and composition to natural diamonds, are also graded using this scale and held to the highest quality standards by the International Gemological Institute (IGI). These certifications ensure that whether you choose a natural or lab-grown diamond, you can trust that the colour grade is consistent, accurate, and internationally recognised.
- D–F: Colourless – Rare and highly valued. Best for white gold or platinum settings.
- G–J: Near Colourless – Excellent value with minimal visible colour.
- K–M: Faint Colour – Slight warmth visible, often paired with yellow gold.
- N–Z: Noticeable Colour – Lower priced, often with a visible yellow or brown tint.
At DX Diamonds, we offer diamonds only within the most desirable D to J colour range. This range includes D–F (colourless) and G–J (near colourless) diamonds, which appear bright, white, and full of brilliance to the naked eye. Just like natural diamonds, our lab grown diamonds are graded on the same strict colour scale, ensuring consistent quality and exceptional visual appeal. With our extensive range of lab grown diamonds available, you can explore a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes at an affordable price without compromising on colour, brilliance, and overall quality.
A DIAMOND'S COMPONENTS
For further guidance, refer to our diamond cut chart. As the quality of a diamond's cut directly affects its sparkle and beauty, Diamond Exchange offers only the finest cut gradings - Very Good, Excellent and Super Ideal.

How the Diamond Colour Impacts Appearance and Value
A colourless diamond (D–F) offers a pure, icy look, ideal for white gold or platinum settings. Near colourless diamonds (G–J) still appear white to most eyes and pair beautifully with various metals. Because colourless diamonds are rarer, they tend to have higher prices, making them a premium choice for those who want maximum brilliance and long-term investment value. Understanding colour helps you choose a diamond that fits both your budget and your aesthetic.

Balancing Colour with Other Diamond Characteristics
While colour matters, it’s only one part of the diamond story. A diamond’s cut, clarity, and carat weight all influence its brilliance and beauty. At DX Diamonds, we guide you to find the right balance among all four Cs.
For example, a slightly lower colour grade with an Excellent or Super Ideal cut can look more dazzling than a colourless diamond with a poor cut. Our curated collection ensures each diamond offers optimal balance and value, no matter your preference or price point.
How to Choose the Right Diamond Colour
When buying a diamond, the colour should match both your style and your budget. At DX Diamonds, we help you make smart, confident choices. Here are a few tips:
- Consider the Metal:
White metals like platinum or white gold highlight the colour. For a crisp, colourless look when using white metals, go for D–F diamond grades. Alternatively, yellow or rose gold settings mask faint colour. That means G–J grades often look just as brilliant, offering value without sacrificing beauty. - Balance with Cut and Clarity:
A slightly lower colour grade can still sparkle beautifully if the cut is Excellent or Super Ideal, a DX Diamonds standard. - Think Long-Term:
A well-balanced diamond in the D–J range not only looks great today but holds value for years to come. - Consider Your Partner’s Style:
Think about what your partner loves. If they’re into sophisticated, flashy aesthetics, a colourless diamond could be just right. If their style leans more towards vintage, a diamond with a bit of warmth set in yellow or rose gold might be the best choice. - Keep Budget in Mind:
You don’t have to go for the highest colour grade to get a stunning diamond. Choosing a slightly lower grade can free up room in your budget for other features like a bigger stone or a custom setting. - Take Advantage of Value:
Lab-grown diamonds often cost significantly less than their natural counterparts. This means you can opt for a higher colour grade while staying within budget.
At DX Diamonds, we’re here to guide you through the entire process, from colour to clarity, cut, and carat, with expert advice and premium selections.

WHAT COLOUR DO WE RECOMMEND?
For a beautiful white colour, we recommend a colour grading within the range of D (absolutely colourless) to G (near-colourless and excellent value).
